Features :
Huanghsi Shuyuan was an architecture masterpiece in the last period of Ching Dynasty. A gentleman named "Chao, Shun-fang" founded it in 1888. It also called "Wen Chang Temple" , which was the culture and education center in the Tatu district in the past. After the 1894-95 Chia-wu War (Sino-Japanese War), Taiwan was ceded to Japan . During the Japanese colonialperiod, the education in Huanghsi Shuyuan was forced to close. The Japanese Army had garrisoned here and kept it in good repair. So Huanghsi Shuyuan has been in good condition. However, after the recovery, there was no management team to manage the place, many objects were stolen. The property was also sold. Huanghsi Shuyuan was no longer graceful and impressive. Fortunately, the former Tatu Town mayor endeavored for it. Finally in 1986, the Ministry of the Interior designated it as a third grade historic site, and appropriated funds for its repair. As a result, Huanghsi Shuyuan restored its original appearance.

Introduction :
Huanghsi Shuyuan was set up in 1888. It is a Chinese traditional rectangular courtyard with houses on four sides. There is a worship pavilion before the lecture room. The two wings are used as vegetarian restaurants. Huanghsi Shuyuan has played an important role in Taiwan architecture. It has three significance: First, its structure is a compound of public building and Confucian temple. Its style is unusual in contrast with the buildings of southern Fu Chien style. Second, its detailed decoration and brick carving are so good that they can be regarded as the most artistic brick building in Taiwan. Third, its roof has special mold: five sections and six swallow tails. There are ventilators on the smaller roofs, which is both artistic and practical. Huanghsi Shuyuan is designated as the third grade historic site by the Ministry of Interior. With the fund from the government, the appearance of Huanghsi Shuyuan has been restored. The cultural antiques can only be locked in the storehouse due to the numerous burglaries.
